We are pleased to announce Petra Lindholm’s exhibition Whatever Knocks on Your Door, Dance with it at PM & Vänner in Växjö, Sweden.
Petra Lindholm works with different techniques and moves freely between the digital, two-dimensional and the analogue, tactile. She alternates between textile images, sound and moving images. This exhibition shows a series of new textile assemblages. The works are based on Lindholm’s interest in our surrounding soundscape and how it affects us. In this case, the images are inspired by the sound frequencies of three tuning forks and a specific colour chord. The motifs are landscapes based on her own video work from the beginning of the 2000s, among other things. She describes it as a stream of sceneries that have emerged through memories, the subconscious and personal experiences.
Petra Lindholm’s works can initially be perceived as paintings, but are in fact made of textiles. She uses thin fabrics in different colours, that are applied in several layers with glue on panels. Lindholm strives for an existence where she embraces the random and spontaneity that arises in the process. The images grow organically as she adds new layers and physically processes the surfaces with her hand and knife. In several of the new works, she has also for the first-time drawn parts of the motif with pastel chalk.

Petra Lindholm (b. 1973 in Karis, Finland) lives and works outside Älmhult in Småland, Sweden. She studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm (1996–2001) and has had solo exhibitions at galleries and institutions in the Nordics, Finland, Germany, Poland, Italy and the USA. She is represented in the collections at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Malmö Konstmuseum, Borås Konstmuseum, Västerås Konstmuseum, EMMA museum, Finland, ProArtibus, Finland and Kiasma, Helsinki. In 2001 she received the Maria Bonnier Dahlin scholarship, in 2006 she was awarded the third prize of the Carnegie Art Award and in 2018 she received the Axel Theodor Sandberg prize from the Academy of Fine Arts. In recent years, she has also carried out a number of larger public design assignments where she worked spatially with sculpture and installation.

Petra Lindholm arbetar med olika tekniker och rör sig obehindrat mellan det digitala, tvådimensionella och det analoga, taktila. Hon växlar mellan textila bilder, ljud och rörlig bild. I utställningen visas en serie nya textila assemblage. Verken utgår från Lindholms intresse för ljud som finns i vår omgivning och hur de påverkar oss. I detta fall är bilderna inspirerade av ljudfrekvenserna från tre stämgafflar och ett specifikt färgackord. Motiven är landskap där hon bland annat återvänt till ett eget videoverk från början av 2000-talet. Hon beskriver det som en ström av landskap som vuxit fram genom minnen, det undermedvetna och personliga erfarenheter.
Petra Lindholms bilder kan inledningsvis uppfattas som måleri, men är utförda textil. Hon använder sig av tunna tyger i olika färger som appliceras i flera lager med lim på pannåer. Lindholm strävar efter en närvaro där hon omfamnar det slumpmässiga och spontana som uppstår i processen. Bilderna växer fram organiskt när hon lägger till nya skikt och fysiskt bearbetar ytorna med hand och kniv. I flera av de nya verken har hon också för första gången tecknat delar av motivet med pastellkrita.
”Tyget lever sitt eget liv och resultatet blir bättre när jag inte försöker styra för mycket. Det kan vara lite som med livet, resultatet kan bli bättre om vi släpper lite på kontrollen. Vågar vara bekväma i det obekväma.”

Petra Lindholm (f. 1973 i Karis, Finland) bor och arbetar utanför Älmhult i Småland. Hon studerade vid Kungliga Konsthögskolan i Stockholm (1996–2001) och har haft separatutställningar på gallerier och institutioner i Norden, Finland, Tyskland, Polen, Italien och USA. Hon är bl.a. representerad i samlingarna på Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Malmö Konstmuseum, Borås Konstmuseum, Västerås Konstmuseum, EMMA museum, Finland, ProArtibus, Finland och Kiasma, Helsingfors. 2001 erhöll hon Maria Bonnier Dahlins stipendium, 2006 tilldelades hon Carnegie Art Awards tredje pris och 2018 fick hon Axel Theodor Sandbergs pris från Konstakademien. Under senare år har hon även utfört ett antal större offentliga gestaltningsuppdrag där hon arbetat rumsligt med skulptur och installation.
