Chart Art Fair 2019: Jockum Nordström

We are pleased to present new works by Jockum Nordström at Chart Art Fair in Copenhagen, Denmark. Jockum Nordström (b. 1963) has worked across borders with art, books and music since the late 1980s. He is one of Sweden’s most internationally acclaimed artists and has exhibited at galleries, museums and institutions all over the world.

In our booth (#6) at Chart Art Fair we will present a series of new collages executed in watercolour, graphite and crayon on paper. The collages consist of painted sheets and pieces of paper mounted together, where the details are Nordström’s starting point. Piles of cut out figures, plants and objects grow for a long time in his studio. The backgrounds are painted carefully and can be seen as backdrops, but also have an increasing importance as abstract elements. In the protracted final phase he arranges the definitive compositions. Just a few of the parts are used in something that is as much a reduction as an addition. In the new works of the exhibition the abstract and painterly interacts with the narrative. They have an unmistakable musicality and humor, but at the same time describe a broken and sad existence.

The most recent book with Jockum Nordström’s art, For the Insects and the Hounds, was released this spring by Zeno X and Koenig Books. It presents a large selection of works from the last years together with a conversation between the artist and Katarina Wadstein Macleod. The book will be available in our booth at the fair.

Nordström twists and turns time frames, figures and art forms; blurring the boundaries between high and low, making hierarchies irrelevant. In Nordström’s art, that which meets the eye is a poetry of pictures and thought: quirky compositions in a state of transformation. Funny, empathetic, but also deeply critical.

Art is a gigantic construction, an enormous ball from ancient times. It is not meant for anything other than ourselves. So that we can understand. Worthless in a way, and yet also incredibly important for the unspoken and the psychological. It is not designed to be appreciated or intended for an audience, or meant for shitty politics of any kind. It simply is. Rather like nature itself. And there it is built up, growing incessantly like mould.
Those of us alive now, and the art created today, are merely piss drops in the ocean compared with the entire construction. I have no problem with this notion. The past is the whole point. The past belongs to us. The past, the present and the future all roll along together in the same ball.

Vi har glädjen att presentera nya arbeten av Jockum Nordström på Chart Art Fair i Köpenhamn.

Jockum Nordström (f. 1963) har arbetat gränsöverskridande med konst, böcker och musik sedan slutet av 1980-talet. Han är en av Sveriges internationellt mest uppmärksammade konstnärer och har ställt ut på gallerier, museer och institutioner över hela världen.

I vår monter (#6) visar vi en serie nya collage utförda i akvarell, blyerts och krita på papper. Collagen består av sammanfogade målade ark och pappersdelar, där Nordström börjar med detaljerna. Under lång tid växer högar fram i ateljén med utklippta figurer, växter och andra föremål. Bakgrunderna som målas omsorgsfullt kan ses som fond för berättelsen, men har också en alltmer bärande roll i bildens uppbyggnad. Slutligen arrangerar Nordström de färdiga kompositionerna i en process som handlar lika mycket om reduktion som tillägg. I bilderna samverkar det abstrakta och måleriska med det narrativa. Här finns en igenkännbar musikalitet och humor, men de beskriver också en trasig och sorglig tillvaro.

Under våren kom en ny bok med Jockum Nordströms konst, For the Insects and the Hounds. Boken innehåller ett stort urval av Nordströms verk från de senaste åren och ett samtal mellan konstnären och Katarina Wadstein Macleod. Den kommer att finnas tillgänglig i vår monter på mässan.

Nordström vänder och vrider på figurer, tidshorisonter och konstformer, högt och lågt, gränsen suddas ut och blir irrelevant. Det som möter ögat i Nordströms konst är en bildens och tankens poesi, finurliga kompositioner i en pågående förvandling, humoristiska, empatiska, men också djupt kritiska.

Konsten är ett jättebygge, en enorm boll från urminnes tider. Den är inte till för något annat än oss själva. För att vi ska förstå.
På sätt och vis värdelös men också otroligt viktig för det ordlösa och mentala. Den finns inte till för uppskattning eller publik, eller för någon sketen politik. Den finns helt enkelt. Som naturen själv. Och där byggs den på som ett oändligt växande mögel.
Vi som lever nu, och konsten som görs idag är små pissdroppar i hela bygget. Den tanken har jag inget problem med. Dåtiden är poängen. Dåtiden tillhör oss. Dåtiden, nutiden och framtiden rullar i samma boll.
