Ulf Lundin | Best of Sweden

We are pleased to announce Ulf Lundin’s eighth solo exhibition at the gallery. 

Best of Sweden presents a photographic project that Ulf Lundin has worked on for the past four years. A new book, designed by Greger Ulf Nilson, is published in connection with the exhibition. It contains a larger selection of images and a text by Lars-Erik Hjertström Lappalainen.

In the project Best of Sweden, Ulf Lundin has photographed the same scene from early morning before dawn until it gets dark again in the evening. The final image is composed of different parts from a selection of exposures he took during the day. It can be night in one corner of the picture, noon in another and a small detail can be illuminated by the early morning light. A whole day compressed into one image.

The title of the project alludes to the subjective choices Lundin makes when deciding which parts of the photographs to use in the final composition, but also to the places he chooses to photograph. Photography is in many cases used to confirm our view of the world around us. Lundin has chosen common and unremarkable places, which we may not usually associate with the image of Sweden. They are not made for the eye, but here they are presented in an idealized light. The project raises the question about what a photograph is and how we perceive it, but also about the environment surrounding us and how we influence, and are influenced by it.

When I first started the project, I thought that the images would be more difficult to read and accept as photographs. Even if every work in the series consists of between 50 and 200 fragments from different photographs, I think that we read them as photographs and not as a painting or a more obviously manipulated image. It says something about how we relate to photography. Even if we know that a photographic image is no evidence of truth we look at them and understand them in a unique way. They are as André Bazin put it ”a hallucination that is also a fact”. Photography is good at capturing a brief moment. It is of course interesting to try to do the opposite.

Vi har glädjen att presentera Ulf Lundins åttonde separatutställning på Galleri Magnus Karlsson. I Best of Sweden redovisas ett fotografiskt arbete som Ulf Lundin arbetat med de senaste fyra åren. I samband med utställningen publiceras en ny bok formgiven av Greger Ulf Nilson med ett större urval av bilder och text av Lars-Erik Hjertström Lappalainen.

I Best of Sweden har Ulf Lundin fotograferat samma scen från tidig morgon innan det ljusnat tills att det åter blivit mörkt på kvällen. Den slutgiltiga bilden är sammansatt av delar från alla de exponeringar han tagit under dagen. Det kan vara natt i ett hörn av bilden och middagstid i en annan del, en detalj kan vara upplyst av ett tidigt morgonljus. En hel dag komprimerad i en bild. 

Utställningens titel anspelar på de subjektiva val Lundin gör. Vilka delar som ska användas, och från vilka fotografier? Det handlar också om de platser han valt att fotografera. Fotografier används i många fall för att bekräfta vår syn på världen omkring oss. Lundin har valt vardagliga platser, som vi kanske inte brukar förknippa med bilden av Sverige. De är inte platser som är gjorda för ögat, men här är de framställda i ett idealiserat ljus. Projektet ställer frågor om vad ett fotografi är och hur vi läser det, men också om den miljö vi har runt omkring oss och om hur vi påverkar och påverkas av den.

När jag började med projektet trodde jag att bilderna skulle vara svårare att läsa och acceptera som fotografi. Även om varje bild i serien jag gjort består av mellan 50 och 200 olika fragment tror jag att vi läser dem som fotografier, inte som en målning eller en mer uppenbart manipulerad bild. Det säger något om hur vi förhåller oss till fotografi. Även om vi vet att en fotografisk bild inte är något bevis på sanning ser vi på den och förstår den på ett unikt sätt. Det är som André Bazin uttryckte det ”en hallucination som också är ett faktum”. Fotografi är bra för att fånga ögonblicket. Därför är det naturligtvis intressant att försöka göra det motsatta.
