Mamma Andersson | Officescapes
Galleri Magnus Karlsson is pleased to present Mamma Andersson’s fifth solo exhibition at the gallery. Mamma Andersson (b. 1962 in Luleå) lives and works in Stockholm. A comprehensive and much appreciated touring solo exhibition produced by Moderna Museet, Stockholm recently finished. The exhibition that consisted of forty paintings from recent years was showed at Moderna Museet last summer and after that at Helsingfors Konsthall in Finland and at Camden Arts Centre in London. After the last gallery show, at David Zwirner in New York (May 2006) she has mostly been working with works on paper. That started with the original diplomas for the winners of the Nobel Prize in literature that she was assigned to make in 2004.
At Galleri Magnus Karlsson a new series of works on paper is exhibited. It is a more intimate and low-voiced show where Mamma Andersson display a whole new side of her artistry. In unpopulated exteriors and interiors Andersson has with a great concentration and presence experimented with the transparent qualities of the paper, colour layers and marks.
“It is hard to think of any painter who is better than Karin Mamma Andersson at revealing the phenomenal enticing and seductive quality of painting, with its surfaces, materiality, colours and play of light. The ability to spellbind and confuse in the same breath. Her work holds everything you could ask of painting – the complete range from softly caressing to roughly clawing. The alluring field of abstraction and the enticing narrative. The atmosphere of rural origins and an international air. Her paintings are so robust – and yet almost freaky! ”
