Med ryggen mot världen / With My Back to the World: Mette Björnberg, Ann Edholm, Carl Hammoud, Bella Rune, Hellvi Kännungs, Gotland

We are pleased to announce this summer’s exhibition at Hellvi Kännungs, Gotland. The rebuilt limestone barn located on northeastern Gotland functions as Galleri Magnus Karlsson’s project space during summertime and this year marks our fifth consecutive presence throughout the month of July. This year’s exhibition, With My Back to the World, has been curated in collaboration with gallery artist Carl Hammoud, who also participates in the exhibition with Mette Björnberg, Ann Edholm and Bella Rune.
The exhibition addresses the boundary between representation and construction. A space where materialized thought negotiate with reality by means of abstraction and transformation. The title With My Back to the World is lifted from a 1997 interview with Agnes Martin (1912–2004) in which she states ”I paint with my back to the world”, as she explains that her work is completely non-projective, and that she has no ideas of her own. In order to do exactly what she wants she waits, with a vacant mind, for inspiration. As inspiration appears her mind is made up not to interfere, but to do exactly what it calls for.
The four artists exhibited in With My Back to the World all have a representational approach, but like Agnes Martin, they also address the conception of their work. By detaining themselves within the transformational process, an immersed understanding of actuality emerges. Our gaze is steered away from the immediate surroundings and we are given a different kind of map to orient ourselves. A map we read with our backs to the world.

Mette Björnberg. Born 1963 in Gothenburg. Based in Kivik, Sweden. Studied at Konsthögskolan in Malmö (1995–1996) and Malmö Art School Forum, Sweden (1991–1995). Ann Edholm. Born 1953 in Stockholm. Based outside Nyköping, Sweden. Educated at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, Sweden (1981–1986). Selected solo exhibitions: Tomelilla Art Center (2015), Galerie Nordenhake, Berlin/Stockholm (2014, 2011, 2009, 2008, 1999, 1997), Museum of Public Art, Lund (2014), Karlskrona Art Center (2012), Maria Stenfors, London (2010), Millesgården (with Håkan Rehnberg) Stockholm (2007), Gothenburg Museum of Art (2003), Uppsala Art Museum (2003). Carl Hammoud. Born 1976 in Stockholm, Sweden. Based in Stockholm, Sweden. Educated at the Valand Academy of Fine Arts, Gothenburg, Sweden (1999–2004). Bella Rune. Born 1971. Based in Stockholm, Sweden. Educated at Chelsea College of Art in London, UK (1995–1998) and Beckmans School of Design, Stockholm, Sweden (1992–1994). Professor in textile arts at the Department of Design, Crafts and Arts at Konstfack University College in Stockholm. She has integrated her art in numerous collaborations with, for example, director Jesper Kouthoofd, choreographer Malin Elgan and the music group The Knife. Selected group and solo exhibitions: Varberg Art Center (2014), Trondheim Art Museum, Norway (2014), Marabouparken, Stockholm (2005), Scandinavian Sparks, Beijing, China (2004), Istanbul Biennial, Turkey (2003), Ynglingagatan 1, Stockholm (2000). Rune’s work has been commissioned for public spaces such as the hospital of Gävle, Sweden (2014). Her works are included in collections such as Malmö Art Museum, Moderna Museet, Stockholm and Gothenburg Museum of Art.
Vi har glädjen att presentera sommarens utställning på Hellvi Kännungs, Gotland. Den ombyggda kalkstensladan på nordöstra Gotland är Galleri Magnus Karlssons projektrum sommartid och det är nu femte året vi verkar där under juli månad. Årets utställning, Med ryggen mot världen, har vuxit fram i samarbete med konstnären Carl Hammoud. Han deltar i utställningen tillsammans med Mette Björnberg, Ann Edholm och Bella Rune.
I utställningen Med ryggen mot världen ser vi skarven mellan gestaltning och konstruktion. Här förhandlar den materialiserade tanken med verkligheten genom abstraktion och transformation. Utställningstiteln kommer från ett citat av den amerikanska konstnären Agnes Martin (1921–2004) som i en intervju från 1997 säger ”I paint with my back to the world”. Hon förklarar att hennes verk inte är en projektion av verkligheten eller något resultat av idéer. För att skapa något nytt väntar hon, med ett öppet sinne, på inspiration. Det är sedan inspirationen som leder henne igenom processen.
Hos de fyra konstnärerna i Med ryggen mot världen finns ett faktiskt förhållningssätt till omvärlden, men liksom Agnes Martin riktar de även uppmärksamheten mot tillblivelsen av verket. Genom att uppehålla sig i själva tolkningsprocessen av det sedda artikulerar de en fördjupning av verkligheten. Våra blickar lockas bort från den omedelbara omgivningen och vi ges en annan slags karta att orientera oss med. En karta vi läser med ryggen vänd mot världen.
